Necro was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up a in the Glenwood Housing Projects, where he lived for eight years from about 6 years old to age 14, when he moved to Canarsie. Born into a Jewish family, he is the son of two Israeli expatriates with ancestry from Israel and Romania. Necro's father was a Romanian born Israeli combat soldier and his mother an Orthodox baalat teshuva. Necro invented the term "death rap" to describe his style of ultraviolent hip hop and to set himself apart from other genre labels created by the media. This sub-genre of rap combines death metal beats with explicit raps about violence, death, the occult,drugs and sex. I caught up with him a few weeks ago and threw some questions at him. Peep it:



ZEBULON:

Firstly, tell me where you grew up, what the scene was like in your hood and how you got into picking up the mic yourself?
 
NECRO:
I Grew Up In Glenwood Projects - It Was Drama Everyday - Fights, Music, Hip hop, Metal - All In One Community Packed With Kids

ZEBULON:

How did you come to the decision that you're gonna start making your own beats too?
 
NECRO:
One day my brother brought in some Russian vinyl from the garbage and it had a break in it - that’s one of the memories i had - since that day I started collecting Russian vinyl then black soul to euro jazz to you name it - i became a break loop fiend - i was also already playing bass and guitar in a death metal band so i was musically inclined but I was intrigued with beat making
 
ZEBULON:

How did your style of hip hop develop into what it is today? Or were you this hardcore from the first time you wrote a rhyme?
 
NECRO:
My First Rhymes Were More Like Leaders Of The New School Mixed With De La Soul And Tribe - Because I Didn’t Know How To Mix In The Brutal Until Maybe 1992 - Took A Good 3 Years To Start Incorporating Evil Shit Into My Rhymes Because I’m A Late Developer hahaha
 
ZEBULON:

Can we expect a Necro trip to South Africa some time in the future?
 
NECRO:
Sure, if someone offers me some shows I’m down
 
ZEBULON:

What aspect of your state of mind and attitude sets you aside from other emcees and producers?
 
NECRO:
I’m Original - I Do What I Want - I Never Follow Anyone Else - I Focus On Doing Shit That Noone Else Is Doing And a lot Of Times I’m So Original And Extreme It Hurts Me Cuz It Doesn’t Appeal To Close-minded People
 
ZEBULON:

How do you feel about the American written rap battle scene?
 
NECRO:
Its cool - I don’t focus on it - I’m worried about the Necro scene
 
ZEBULON:

When can we expect a new mixtape or album release?
 
NECRO:
I’m working on completing the godfathers album now with Kool G Rap that’s priority
 
ZEBULON:

How do you feel about the state that the commercial rap scene is in at the moment?
 
NECRO:
I despise it - but I cant control it so I focus on what I can control my career
 
ZEBULON:

Any advice for aspiring rappers or producers?
 
NECRO:
Yeah get into the tech business - making apps and get a job with apple - that’s the future - being a rapper is a waste of time unless you really are gonna dedicate ya life and don’t expect to be rich from music overnight - better off creating technology hahaha
